Effectiveness of telehealth in preventive care: A randomised controlled trial of tele-exercise programme involving elderly with possible sarcopenia or at risk of fall
Funded by the Health and Medical Research Fund
Project Reference No.: 05200028
Amount Awarded: HK$1,258,820.00
Aims and Objectives: The primary objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of tele-exercise (TE) on physical function and exercise adherence among the elderly with possible sarcopenia or at risk of fall in comparison with a community-based group (CB). The secondary objectives include evaluating the elderly’s experience with tele-exercise, with an emphasis on their psychological welfare, social wellbeing, and acceptance of the telehealth approach.
Target Group and Size: 92 Hong Kong elderly aged 65 years or above with a diagnosis of possible sarcopenia or at risk of fall and able to perform exercise alone will be recruited. Participants will be randomly assigned into two groups ie TE or CB.
Deliverables: The health promotion and recruitment phase will reach around 660 community-dwelling elderly. Deliverables will be 92 elderly who have completed the modified Otago Exercise Programme using either tele-exercise (TE) or traditional face-to-face community-based group (CB) 3 days per week for 12 weeks. The elderly will be monitored for a year regarding their fall incidence, exercise habit and activity level. The performance of the elderly on the fall incidence, strength and balance are expected to be improved for both groups. The findings of this research will be presented in international conferences and published in peer-reviewed international journals. Key Milestones: Participant recruitment and baseline assessment (1st-8th month); Intervention and outcome assessment at 12-week, 6-month and 12-month (4th-21th month); data management and report writing and conference presentation (18th -24th month).
